Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry
Windsor has accreditation for core and
elective rotations in child and adolescent psychiatry.
Dr. Tamison Doey, Academic Director,
Postgraduate Teaching, will coordinate your child psychiatry experience.
Options may include inpatient exposure at
Maryvale Adolescent and Family Centre, the home of a newly built nine bed unit;
this home-like facility, unique in Ontario, is under the direction of Dr.
Farzana Tak.
Outpatient experiences at both Maryvale and
Regional Children’s Center (RCC) include a consultation service for community
doctors and an adolescent clinic. Multidisciplinary services include
interprofessional colleagues. A number of faculty participate in these
clinics. Child and adolescent psychiatrists include: Dr. Yousha Mirza, Dr. Saima
Ahmad, Dr. Rachel Burdett, Dr. Claire Stroker, Dr. Kenny Handelman and Dr.
Humera Athar, as well as Drs. Doey and Tak.
Outreach clinics are staffed by Dr. Doey in
Leamington and Chatham; as well, there are opportunities for telepsychiatry and
shared care.
In addition to interviewing children and
seeing community referrals of patients under 18 years with a variety of
diagnoses, you will also have a chance to observe neuropsychiatric testing and
autism evaluations with Psychologists’ Dr. C. Saunders, Dr. Marcia Gragg and Dr.
J. Strang, and learn about other psychological testing with Dr. S. Horlick.
A number of faculty can involve you in therapy
for youth in a number of modalities, including cognitive behavioural therapy and
play therapy.
Opportunities exist to review developmental
psychology with Dr. S. Ahmad, participate in a clinic for youthful sex offenders
with John Steers, MSW, or work in the local eating disorders program with Dr. A.
Steen, all members of UWO faculty.
