There is an active educational and research department who coordinates weekly educational events for the medical staff, which includes other psychiatry, and family practice residents from other programs. These educational events complement the rotation specific learning objectives and are of high quality. Dr. Cochrane is an enthusiastic supervisor and the clinical experience on a rehabilitation unit is challenging, interesting and provides a wide range of experiences involved in the delivery of care to the chronically mentally ill population~ Dr. Joanne Holtby, PGY4

Senior's Elective/Level of Trainee: PGY2–PGY5

Flexible, requires division head approval 6 months: Psychotherapy

Nature of Experience:

  • Combined inpatient and outpatient care in the Clinical Rehabilitation Evaluation Units [creu], which involves interdisciplinary inpatient and outreach regional service
  • Opportunity to travel to Timmins and the James Bay Coast
  • Consultative/liaison service to case management and Assertive Community Treatment Team [ACTT], including the integration of Telepsychiatry

Patient Population:

  • Long-term care and rehabilitation of patients with severe and persistent mental illness, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective and refractory bipolar disorder – the majority of whom has complicating co-morbid psychiatric and medical conditions.
  • Other experiences include sub specialized areas such as: water intoxication, protocols for managing clozapine induced seizures, including dosing guidelines for resistance and approach to clozapine non responders
  • Geriatrics

Distance: 333 Km from Toronto
