Nature of experience:

Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital is a 132 bed regional psychiatric hospital located in the City of Thunder Bay

  • Rehabilitation Program.. A resident assigned to the service would split their time between inpatients and outpatients. A significant amount of time would be providing community based service. There is also opportunity to gain protocol experience in the use of newer anti-psychotic agents
  • Psychogeriatric Program. The resident working with the Program would join the multidisciplinary teams and would gain considerable experience in the inpatient and outpatient treatment of seniors with psychiatric illness, both organic and functional in origin. The resident would also work as part of a community psychogeriatric program, assessing and treatment patients in the community and liaising with other community support programs
  • Forensic Program. Training available in an 18-bed unit admitting patients for forensic assessment and Ontario Criminal code Review Board patients for rehabilitation
  • Northwestern Ontario Concurrent Disorders Programs. Program components are psychiatric, medical, social assessment and treatment for people with a concurrent disorder. Treatment modalities are pharmacotherapy and group and individual psychotherapy
  • Outpatient/Urgent Care Program. Training opportunities available in two separate components of the program: an on-site crisis service staffed by a multidisciplinary team providing emergency services, and a large outpatient service providing assessment and treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders as well as follow-up for patients discharged from the Acute Care Program

  • Adult population with a variety of mental health problems including mood disorders, anxiety, schizophrenia, organic psychiatric conditions and personality disorders
  • Seniors with psychiatric illness both organic and functional in origin
