About the Program: Clinical Services

James Bay Psychiatric Outreach Program
Sponsored by McMaster University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences.

Two psychiatrists from McMaster University have been providing fly-in psychiatric services to the West Coast of James Bay since 1992. These communities include Moose Factory, Moosonee, Fort Albany, Saskatchewan and Attawapiskat. These are primarily Cree communities although English is also spoken.

Services provided include consultations to Family Physicians as well as working closely with Native Mental Health Workers of the James Bay Community Mental Health Program. Patients are seen in a variety of settings including the Weenebayko General Hospital, Nursing Stations of the James Bay General Hospital and the Federal Government, as well as through community agencies. Patients are frequently seen in their homes. The trips are coordinated through the Executive Director of the James Bay Community Mental Health Program in Moosonee. One psychiatrist generally works in Moose Factory and Moosonee while the other psychiatrist will attend patients in a coastal community as well as Moosonee each visit. The James Bay Community Mental Health Program works closely with mental health workers and these workers do much of the liaising with the community and the community patients. The Chief of Staff at the Weenebayko General Hospital acts as liaison between psychiatry and the Family Practice Group.

Sault Ste. Marie Psychiatric Outreach Program
Sponsored by McMaster University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences

McMaster University's Sault Ste. Marie Psychiatric Outreach Program has been in operation since 1995. Two-day outpatient clinics are conducted with the Department of Psychiatry at the Sault Area Hospitals, although the frequency of the visits has diminished over the past years.

Services provided include consultations to family physicians within an environment that gives us access to excellent resources. McMaster's Psychiatric Outreach Program provides limited service at the clinic, a clinic serviced more extensively by the University of Toronto's Psychiatric Outreach Program.

Collaboration with other Medical Schools

Consultants from McMaster University have formed a partnership with the Psychiatric Outreach Program, University of Toronto to provide psychiatric care in Sault Ste. Marie.
