The Hospital's Mission:

Northeast Mental Health Centre - North Bay Campus is a regional mental health resource dedicated to providing high quality services to individuals identified as having a serious mental illness.

The Hospital's aim is to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment, promote and foster community reintegration at the most appropriate independent level and to reduce the need for hospitalization and institutional care.

Specialized treatment and rehabilitation services are directed towards assisting these Individuals reach their optimum level of functioning through collaboration and partnership with other community agencies and services.

Population Served:

Northeast Mental Health Centre - North Bay Campus is committed to serving the following target populations on an inpatient or outpatient basis:

  • Individuals identified as having a serious mental illness/mental disorder requiring the specialized services of the hospital.
  • Adults diagnosed as having the following illnesses: schizophrenia, affective disorders, dementia with other serious mental disorders such as a major psychosis or affective disorders.
  • Severely mentally disordered/ill offenders including patients under disposition orders of the Ontario Criminal Code Review Board.
  • Individuals with a serious mental disorder and an addiction or substance abuse problem.

The hospital's target population may also include:

  • Individuals dually diagnosed (developmentally handicapped combined with a serious mental disorder).
  • Individuals with acquired brain damage who have behavioural and/or psychiatric problems.

Extended Campus Program

Three psychiatrists maintain faculty appointments with the University of Western Ontario. The Psychiatrist-in-Chief of the Northeast Mental Health Centre - North Bay Campus, represents the Extended Campus Program on the Research Committee of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Western Ontario.

Departmental members provide multiple educational programs (CME type programs) to Northeast Mental Health Centre.

University of Toronto

Five psychiatrists have faculty appointments with the University of Toronto. The University of Toronto in collaboration with the Northeast Mental Health Centre is offering 6 month core rotations in chronic care and geriatric psychiatry to residents in psychiatry in North Bay. We are currently developing a psychotherapy selective option for residents as well.

McMaster University

Residency Programs offered throughout Northern Ontario by NOSM in collaboration with McMaster University and the the University of Ottawa. Postgraduate education is available in family medicine and major general specialities of general medicine, general surgery, othopaedics, paediatrics, obsterics and gynecology, psychiatry and anaethesia. NOSM continues to bild on current programs and work towards increasing the number of specialty residency posts and training programs in Northern Onario.
