About the Program: Mission Statement:

The Northern Ontario Francophone Psychiatric Program strives to provide the highest quality francophone psychiatric services to the clients, consumers and personnel of Northern Ontario Community Mental Health programs or other MOH agencies having identified the need for such a service.

Goals:

The program maintains a pool of francophone psychiatrists willing to travel to Northern Ontario and to work with the Community Mental Health programs multidisciplinary team and/or community physicians, by offering them a variety of psychiatric, clinical and educational services.

Objectives:

1. Provide the various Hospitals and Community Mental Health Program in Northern Ontario where the francophone population warrants it, the highest possible level of psychiatric care through the provision of adequate psychiatric manpower.

2. Develop, through the office of the Coordinator of the Francophone Psychiatric Services and the University of Ottawa. Department of Psychiatry, a pool of psychiatrists fluent in French and willing to establish permanently or to travel on a regular basis to designated areas in Ontario, where the need for their clinical services has been established.

3. Assist in the recruitment and training of francophone Canadian or foreign graduate psychiatrists, as well as other mental health care personnel, in order to provide adequate psychiatric care in areas designated as underserviced.

4. Provide medical practitioners and other mental health professionals working in underserviced areas with ongoing education, consultation and supervision.

5. Provide personnel working in underserviced areas readily available consultation by phone for difficult to manage cases.

6. Provide liaison services with the various specialized departments of the University of Ottawa Department of Psychiatry.

7. Develop audio-visual links with the various community mental health clinics in Northeastern and Eastern Ontario, in order to provide continuous medical education programs and consultation services.

8. Provide, through the training facilities of the University, the opportunity for general practitioners, nurses and other mental health professionals to receive intensive training sessions in the management of acute psychiatric casualties.

9. Maintain ongoing liaison with the Underserviced Area Program and French Language Health Services of the Ministry of Health.

The activities of the Northern Ontario Francophone Psychiatric Program are presently offered in the communities identified below by the various psychiatrists of the program:

The psychiatrists of the program are offering the equivalent of 450 days of clinical activities to these service points in a given year.
