The Sault Area Hospitals' Mental Health Services consist of an in-patient unit, on-site out-patient programs and community based mental health programs. It is the Sault Area Hospitals' belief that all clients/patients are unique individuals responsible for their own health and independence. All treatment programs are designed to meet the client/patient's individual needs and are offered in a safe, therapeutic and supportive environment. The program's aim is to enhance the dignity and self-respect of an individual: the foundation necessary for personal growth, self care, and a return to independence.

The Sault Area Hospital Out-Patient Psychiatric Clinic is the result of a multi-center collaboration between the local mental health program, visiting psychiatrists from the University of Toronto and McMaster University. The site coordinator for the Out-Reach Program from the University of Toronto is Dr. Robert Cooke and the local coordinator is Dr. Henry Leung who is also a University of Toronto Faculty appointee. The team from Toronto consists of six faculty members that come regularly to the clinic in Sault Ste. Marie. In addition, they are often accompanied by residents from the University of Toronto residency program.

Since June 2001, the Sault Area Hospital has been accreditated as an affiliated teaching hospital with the University of Toronto in the provision of mandatory/long-term rotations in adult genaral psychiatry. Accreditation for a core rotation in chronic care was received in the summer of 2002.

The team from McMaster University consists of four faculty members of the Department of Psychiatry with Dr. Gary Chaimowitz functioning as the coordinator of the Out-Reach Program. In addition to the visits, there has also been a video conference linkage between the Out-Patient Clinic, Sault Area Hospitals and the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital.

Currently, Dr. Henry Leung, is a faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto and a member of the Extended Campus Program, Department of Psychiatry, University of Western Ontario. Dr. Lino Piston (medical director), Drs. Gary Kelcher and David MacPhee (psychologists) are faculty members of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto.

In addition to direct service provision and educational efforts, Dr. Hodges, Director, Psychiatric Outreach Program, University of Toronto, Dr. Gary Chaimowitz, Clinical Director, Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital and Dr. Henry Leung also actively participate in research in the area of service provision and educational training in underserviced areas. There are currently other research endeavors either pursued or in the process of being completed.

  • The team from McMaster University providing services consists of four faculty members from the Department of Psychiatry under the direction of Dr. Gary Chaimowitz.

Psychiatric Outreach Program

  • Sends visiting psychiatrists from the Psychiatric Outreach Program to Sault Ste. Marie consisting of six faculty members and psychiatric residents accompanying U of T Faculty on Outreach electives.

  • Dr. Melissa Andrews provides specialized service in geriatric psychiatry to Sault Ste. Marie and outlying areas.

Dr. Leung of the Sault Area Hospitals Mental Health Program, is a member of the Extended Campus Program.
