concurrent disorders and chemical dependency treatment: Northwestern Ontario Concurrent Disorders Program:

The Northwestern Ontario Concurrent Disorders Program provides psychiatric and addictions treatment for people with concurrent disorders. Each client participates in an initial comprehensive, assessment. Those who are appropriate for treatment with the program, then participate in developing an individualized program to meet their needs.

A professional trained in both psychiatric and addictions services works in partnership with the client and the multidisciplinary team. Using an outpatient intensive case management and psychiatric team work approach, the majority of the program involvement will be in the community and in the client's home environment.

The program staff includes representation from the following disciplines: nursing, social work, psychology, and therapeutic recreation. An addictions specialist provides psychiatric management and the clinical guidance for the team. Occupational therapy, clinical dietary consultation, crisis intervention, chaplaincy and vocational rehabilitation services are also available.

The program provides comprehensive psychiatric and addictions assessment, referral and treatment services, professional consultation, individual and group therapy with respect to psychiatric and substance dependence issues, continuing care including psychiatric hospitalization if this is required, coordination of medical care and support systems, gender sensitive programs, riving and leisure skills training and Methadone maintenance.

The duration of treatment varies and is dependant upon the client's needs upon assessment at each stage of treatment. Generally, intensive treatment lasts from two to six months with less intensive follow-up lasting from one to two years.
