Agency Information:
The Timmins and District Hospital is a Schedule 1 facility that serves the Cochrane District with a catchment area of 100,000 people. Within the hospital, there is an inpatient mental health unit that serves an adult population of 16 years of age and over. It is an acute care unit comprising 20 beds. There are 1.0 social worker and a combination of RPNs and RNs. There are also one full-time and two part-time Psychiatrists who are assisted by locum psychiatrists from the Psychiatric Outreach Program (Toronto) and the Francophone Psychiatric Services of Northeast and Eastern Ontario (Ottawa).

Also, included in the Mental Health Program is an outpatient service. The hospital offers a multitude of psychoeducational programs that deal with specific issues such as abuse, schizophrenia, mood disorders, and anger. Psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health workers are available. There is also a weekly Outpatient Neuroleptic Clinic offered for the seriously mentally ill. These above mentioned services are provided to adults, 16 years of age and over only.

Programs offered:

Core Anger Program:

The Core Anger Program is designed to help clients to increase their knowledge about anger and cope more effectively on a day to day basis. It is offered once a week for 6 weeks.

Neuroleptic Clinic:

This clinic is designed for clients who are seriously mentally ill. The primary diagnosis is usually schizophrenia. Most clients are on an anti-psychotic medication, mainly injectable which they can receive weekly or monthly. The clinic runs every Wednesday with Dr. Raveendran as the consulting psychiatrist, and nurses.

Psychiatry:

Psychiatric evaluations are available upon request. The hospital has two local psychiatrists and locum psychiatrists who provide services at different times throughout the year.

Relaxation Group:

This psycho-educational group is designed to assist those who suffer from anxiety and stress. This program will teach clients how to reduce the chronic effects of stress (physical and mental symptoms) and promote wellness.

Midstep Program:

Midstep is an educational program for adults who are diagnosed with schizophrenia. Psycho-education group sessions are provided in the six week Core Program or ongoing Aftercare sessions. The program also offers home visits by nurses who monitor clients medications and well-being.

Brief Therapy:

Individual counselling is available to those faced with emotional stress, conflicts or other difficult life situations. This therapy is solution based brief therapy.

Rebonding Program:

This is an education program for female survivors of abuse. Through education we assist clients with their healing process in a safe professional and comfortable manner. The program uses various modalities such as: short presentations, group discussion, relaxation therapy, art, music and movement.

Breakthrough Program:

Breakthrough is a psycho-educational day program for people (16 years +) living with depression or a mood disorder. It is offered 3 days a week for a period of 4 weeks. It will give clients an opportunity to learn about their illness and now to cope with it in their day to day life.

Overcoming Anxiety, Panic & Phobia Program:

This program is for adults suffering from anxiety, panic, & phobia. It is a solution focussed program designed to help clients better manage and cope with their anxiety and related symptoms. The program consists of 6 sessions scheduled over an 8 week period.

Transitional Care Program:

This program is available for individuals (16 years +) with a psychiatric diagnosis, which is in some degree of remission, or in an acute illness. A variety of one-on-one and bio-psychological group therapy will be offered while providing an ongoing assessment for a duration of 3 weeks.

In the last year we have been involved with the Regional Eating Disorders Program. This team improves access to specialty treatment services for clients living across Northeastern Ontario. Our district clinician provides initial assessment, treatment and case management for patient and family.

Our Community Seniors Program provides community consultation services, assessments and intervention to assist elderly with mental health problems, and their caregivers. They also provide home visits within the community. The program runs daily from Monday to Friday and is comprised of two full-time psychiatric nurses.

The Concurrent Disorder Program is coordinated by a full-time nurse and started in February 2007. It provides services as part of the Outpatient Mental Health Service to clients with a co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse issue. It also provides assessment, intervention and support to assist clients to remain in the community, to assist with referrals to residential or community support treatment programs and to prevent psychiatric hospitalizations where possible. They also provide groups every Wednesday where clients work on their primary recovery plan.

We have a Crisis Team, which provides coverage for the Emergency Department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Crisis staff is able to provide efficient and adequate service to our Emergency Department and to the Hospital. The Emergency Physicians find them very helpful so that they can use their time efficiently.

We continue to provide ECT services to in-patient and out-patiemt mental helath services. ECT is provided 3 times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 7:30 in the morning.

  • The Northern Ontario Francophone Psychiatric Program sponsors Dr. Kraus 1 day in 6 weeks and Dr. Melanson, 2 days per month (Francophone services) and Dr. Grondin 2 days per month (Psychogeriatric services).

Psychiatric Outreach Program

  • The Psychiatric Outreach Program currently has consultation visits to Timmins for two-day trips, three times per month. Resident electives are available.
