Undergraduate Education

Overview

Welcome to the Undergraduate Education section for the Department of Psychiatry.

Psychiatric education in the undergraduate medical program consists of the following:

First Year: Although there are no formal teaching sessions in the first year, students are invited to attend half-day clinical observerships. Our clinical faculty is happy to have students join members for a half-day. If you are interested in arranging an observership please contact us at ugepsychiatry@lhsc.on.ca.

Second Year: Psychiatry & the Behavioural Sciences (Medicine 5207) is a five-week course offered in the second year which provides an introduction to psychiatry (such as interviewing skills and the mental status exam), followed by blocks of approximately one week in the areas of child psychiatry, anxiety, psychotic and mood disorders.

Second year medical students also participate in three weeks of PCCM (Patient Centred Clinical Methods) which allows an opportunity to perform psychiatric interviews on standardized patients who present with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses.

Third year: The Psychiatry Clinical Clerkship is six weeks long. This rotation is broken down into three two-week blocks including a two-week selective. Clinical clerks work in different clinical areas with exposure to both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry. Each Wednesday morning students are released from their clinical duties to attend the clerkship seminar series.

Fourth year: Elective students can experience rotations as short as two weeks or as long as their schedule allows. This is an important time to consolidate your interest in psychiatry as a career and get those all-important references for your CaRMS application.

Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN): Undergraduate rotations are available in Chatham, Sarnia, Stratford, St. Thomas and Windsor.
